5 most common Decorating mistakes and how to fix them.
1. Ignoring the focal point, one of the most common decorating mistakes. If you’ve got it, flaunt it. Decorating around your focal point is easy. How do you use your room? Is it a TV room? Is the fireplace the most prominent feature? Do you have a view that you sit and enjoy? Redesign you room so you can enjoy that main attraction. Sometimes there are 2 focal points. In these cases try placing the 2 close together so you can enjoy both. try arranging the furniture in a "U" shape or an "L" shape. Keep traffic lanes open for movement.
2. Arranging all of your furniture against the walls. How boring! You may think your room is not large enough to group your furniture together but you would be surprised. If you create groupings that are close together it makes the space more intimate. Nobody will be shouting across the room. Foot traffic can be directed behind the TV viewing area. You will also be able to break up one large room into two smaller more functional spaces.
3. Lining up your accessories everywhere.Decorating with collections can turn into clutter if you’re not careful. Start by clearing everything off. Carefully clean and set aside you pieces. Now dust your display areas. See how nice your room looks with all of the open space? Now start arranging your favorites. Only display half of your collection at a time. Leave open areas in your room so you create visual space. Group your collections in areas that show them off best.
4. Hanging your pictures too high. Decorating mistakes 101. No, it doesn’t make your ceilings look higher. The easiest way to fix this habit is to hang the center of the picture at eye level. Now I know everybody is a little different height but let’s use some common sense. Make it comfortable to see the details if you can get up close. If it is hung over a couch or a piece of furniture, don’t split the difference between the ceiling and the furniture. Bring it down low enough to create a visual unity between the two.
5.Using book shelves only for books. Share the space with interesting pieces. Open up half of the shelf for a plate on a stand or a framed picture.then on the next shelf open up the other side to balance the look. Think of the shelf unit as a rectangle and lay a triangle over the top. Put in three open areas on the shelves. Two on one side and one on the other. This way you have balance. You can lay several books in a stack and use them as a base for a figurine or pottery. Have fun with it don't worry about making mistakes, when it is right you will know. Decorating shelves will add a nice touch to the room.
Your decorating mistakes are easy to fix if you know what they are. You can get a completely different look in one day, have fun with it!
